Fact: The above ‘fact’ is full of shit. WAR BONNETS ARE NOT A FASHION STATEMENT. War Bonnets are not to be worn because you want to get in touch with your new agey side.

Here’s a quick checklist for whether it’s ok to wear a war bonnet:

Was it placed onto your head by an elder/legitimate authority figure from a select number of plains nations because you personally achieved something so great that it is worthy of that kind of honor? (corrolary: If yes to the above, are you currently wearing it in an appropriate ceremonial fashion/setting? Like are you at a powwow or speaking with the president?)

If you answered ‘no’ then IT IS NOT OK.

It is not an extension of your soul.

You know, I like wearing things on my head. And I love the shit out of feathers. And somehow remembering that an important part of another person’s culture shouldn’t be used in pursuit of my fashuns still isn’t difficult.

If you need some way to express your in-touchness with nature/your inner self/whatever, may I suggest a cloche? It makes about as much damn sense.
